The Open Forest Observatory, a collaboration across universities and other partners, is working to automate forest mapping using drone- and ground-based imagery collected using low-cost platforms. We aim to make rapid forest mapping accessible to ecologists, land managers, and the general public regardless of budget or technical background.
All of our work is open-source (see our work on GitHub). We are keen to collaborate with anyone interested in using and/or contributing to our tools. Learn how to contact us.
We host databases of imagery-derived forest data and traditional ground-based forest inventory data, often at the same sites, along with data collection guidelines.
We develop and support easy-to-use software tools to allow users to process their own drone and/or ground imagery into individual-tree forest maps.
